What is Streaming?

Streaming is a technology that allows you to watch a video or listen to audio via the internet without waiting for an entire file to download.

For example, the later parts of the video will download while you are watching the first parts, so your media player always has enough data to continue playing the video without interruption.

This is a better experience for viewers and a more economic use of broadcasters’ bandwidth and processing power. Broadcasters typically wish to provide two forms of streaming content: Live and OnDemand.

For example, a radio station might want to broadcast their live audio content via the internet, simultaneously as it broadcasts via FM radio. However, the same radio station might also like to use OnDemand access, which will provide users with recorded and achieved content.

HTTP Streaming is a technology which allows us to watch and listen to multimedia content on the Internet, while they are being downloaded.

  • Instantly share videos, music or any other media content.
  • You don’t have to wait until a file has completely downloaded to watch or listen to it, playback begins instantly.
  • While one part of a file is playing, the next part will be loading.
  • Skip to the part that you are interested in, without having to watch the entire video.
  • Furthermore, you don’t have to have broadband to be able to see videos in high definition and without interruption.

How does it work?

Streaming with Flumotion Streaming Software is easy.

  • Configure each hardware machine in your computer as an encoder, streamer or both
  • The Encoder gets the signal from a capturing device or content provider while the Streamer is in charge of the delivery

The encoding process

  • Encode your contents with one of the many popular codecs included inside the Software.
  • The encoding process creates different media formats and sends them to the streamer.
  • The same hardware can encode content in multiple formats, depending on its configuration and capacity.

The Streaming Process

How does the streaming process work?

  • Enables you to deliver Live and on-demand stream traffic directly to your end users.
  • The streamer is also multi-format, so it can serve several audio and video streams in one or various formats.
  • The same server machine can be used for the encoding and streaming processes, although it is recommended to separate both across machines.
  • It is a full end-to-end solution, as it covers the entire streaming process.
